This report, prepared by Earthonomics and Chennai Resilience Centre, investigates the impact of terrace gardens on heat mitigation within urban environments, using the Anbagam Homeless Shelter in Chennai as a case study. The study details the methodology used, including sensor installation and data collection from both a garden-covered and an exposed roof section, across various weather conditions. Findings indicate that the terrace garden generally reduces internal temperatures, especially during peak heat hours, with simulations suggesting even greater cooling if the entire roof were covered with foliage. The discussion and recommendations highlight the benefits of such green infrastructure for improving thermal comfort and building climate resilience.
